Understanding What is a Website or Blogger Sitemap?

A sitemap or commonly known as a sitemap is a file that provides information on a website or blog, the information displayed is the website URL, videos, images, article titles, the date of the website page (article) published or published, and others.

A sitemap is very important because it can make it easier for Google to crawl complex web pages, such as online store websites that have thousands or even millions of products, news websites or blogs that have a large number of articles, and others.

According to the Google developer site, there are several sitemap formats that you can know, such as:

1. XML Sitemap

2. Sitemap RSS, mRSS, and atom 1.0

3. Sitemap text

Each sitemap or sitemap is limited in size, such as no more than 50MB (uncompressed file), and only holds 50,000 URLs. And if the website has a file size and number of URLs that are more than specified, it can create a new sitemap to separate the files in each different sitemap.

You can use a sitemap and send it to the google search console or google webmaster, if you want to add an XML sitemap, see How to Create a Sitemap / Sitemap in Google Search Console

The following is an example of an XML sitemap on the nusratcollection.com blog:

xml sitemap example

Inside this sitemap.xml there is another sitemap based on a page or sitemap page, each sitemap page can accommodate many URLs, sitemap.xml separation really helps Google to recognize URLs or website pages that have just been published or published such as article pages, navigation pages, product pages selling for web online stores in which there are pictures and videos, and others.

And below is an example of an atom.xml sitemap on a blog or website nusratcollection.com

atom sitemap example

atom.xml sitemap displays categories based on labels, article titles, post feeds, authors, emails, and website or blog URLs, at a glance atom.xml is more complete than sitemap.xml. But the drawback of atom.xml does not display all URLs and only shows the most recent URL or web page or blog.
